It has a hallow inside which helps produce the sound that it has. There are two parts of the hangpan, the Ding, which is the top part of the instrument which has seven or eight “tone fields” surrounding the center note all hammered in. The bottom part is called the “Gu” which is simply has a plain surface that has a rolled hole in the center with a tuned note that can be created when the rim is struck. Playing this requires soft tapping of the hand or just the fingers in order to keep the sound in tune.
It produces that sounds like bells or a harp, depending on how it s played. There are newly grown musicians that has taken the passion of playing this instrument but the production of authentic hangpans, from PanArt, has stopped in 2013 as they are focusing more on creating a different kind of instrument this time.
